Chip vs. Programmer?

We offer chips and handheld programmers. With a programmer, you connect to the OBDII port and upload programs onto the PCM (powertrain control module). This is also sometimes referred to as an ECM. We use SCT programmers and offer the SCT X3, X3 SF and Touch Screen Extreme. A programmer will hold up to 3 custom tunes and will only allow you to load one program at a time. The programmer will pull off your stock program from the PCM and store it in its memory and upload the tune of your choice depending on what is on it. If you have multiple programs and you wish to change to another program, you have to stop, turn off the truck, then upload a new program. These handhelds will also read codes on a Ford Vehicle.

Our chips install directly onto the PCM via the J3 port on the backside of the PCM. This requires removing the PCM to install the chip. With a chip you can up to 16 programs onto the chip which allows you to change between programs “on the fly” without having to stop. You can switch from one program to another instantly with the push of a button. The chip simply overrides “Factory” programming and you can remove the chip to revert back to “Stock Factory” programming. Chips offer more options and versatility.
